Whakarongotai Marae

                                         
         The history of Whakarongotai
  • Meeting house moved to current location in 1886 closer to the growing settlement near the railway so the iwi could get construction  jobs.
  • Between 1970s and 1980s the meeting house was.                                                                                                                                                          Focal  point for iwi 1880.
  • In 1984 a carving of a female holding a white bird represented peace on the grounds.
  • Te Puna o te Aroha meaning foundation of love carved from Kauri tree given to them by the descendants of William Jenkins and his wife Paeroke.
