Gone to War

They left for war a week ago,
maybe to never return.
Off to the pyramids of Cairo,
for what was thought to be ‘over the top’ training.
Families received postcards,
from loved ones gone to war.
The landing was a disaster,
for the public not to know.
The water dyed red with ANZAC blood,
hospital ships already full before the battle had begun.
The public knew nothing of the deaths,
only the victory yet to be had.
Letters being sent,
now revealing the truth of the war.
The day ANZAC’s returned,
they were filled more with sorrow.
They had to face the truth they were gone.
Dead never to be seen again,
now just memories in the minds of loved ones.
The sorrow of war shall be remembered through time,
the pain never forgotten.
