The terrace tunnel was opened in 1978 ,460 meters long. The reason why it was built so people could get easier access to Wellington. The tunnel was built through the bolton st cemetery which opened in 1850. 3700 graves were moved as a result. The Thornden residents were protesting because their area was split in half.It cost 60 million dollars, some of the protests were about the fact families didn’t want their ancestors dug up and disturbed.Others were annoyed because historic buildings were being demolished.Some annoyed because the tunnel went right under mount st catholic cemetery.
